HEDONIA

Sculpture

In Michel Foucault’s Madness and Civilization, Hedonia is described as a goddess of indulgence. The blue-skinned protagonist serves as a reflection of the artist’s personal experiences. Like many of her millennial peers, she navigates the tensions between national identity and cognitive dissonance—an internal conflict that shapes her self-perception.
The erosion of geographical boundaries has intensified the pull between a Westernized mindset and a culturally rooted reality, leaving her grappling with the seemingly simple yet profound question: “Who am I?”

Draped in lavish garments and adorned with ornate shackles, she embodies the moral frameworks imposed on women by society—both ornamental and restrictive. In the artwork, Hedonia holds a mirror, gazing at her own reflection from a distance. This mirror becomes a symbol of self-inquiry: “The Fool’s Mirror” is also ‘The Fool’s Realm’—a metaphor for the paradox of self-awareness, where one’s perception of the self is both infinitely distant and intimately close, embodying an inescapable sense of fate.
